Cancer is the second biggest cause of death in the United States, after heart disease. The American Cancer Society predicted 553,400 people will die this year of cancer in the U.S. 24 percent of Americans smoke. About the same percentage do not eat the recommended minimum of five servings of FRUITS and VEGETABLES a day, which reduces the risk of CANCER and HEART DISEASE. Thursday January 4 5:24 PM ET Group Says US Cancer Cases Will Surge Some in 2001 By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Correspondent WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Cancer experts on Thursday predicted a slight upswing in the number of cancer cases and deaths in the United States in the coming year. But while the American Cancer Society (news - web sites) predicted 1.27 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2001 -- compared to 1.22 million in 2000 -- the number may be slightly misleading. Cancer rates have gone down for several years in a row, but the U.S. population is growing, meaning more people will get cancer even though rates are slowing. Cancer is the second biggest cause of death in the United States, AFTER HEART DISEASE. The American Cancer Society predicted 553,400 people will die this year of cancer, compared to 552,200 in 2000. But the good news was more people were expected to survive their cancer. ``The five-year relative survival rate for all cancers combined is 60 percent, an increase of 1 percent from the report in 2000,'' the nonprofit group said in a statement. Lung cancer remains the No. 1 cause of cancer death in the United States with an estimated 157,400 deaths expected in 2001. The annual report predicted 192,700 new cases of breast cancer in 2001, with 40,000 deaths; 135,400 cases of colorectal cancer, with 56,700 deaths, and 198,100 cases of prostate cancer with 31,500 deaths. The report highlighted recent findings that obesity increases the risk for many kinds of cancer, including cancers of the breast, endometrium (uterus), cervix, ovary, gall bladder, colon, and prostate. It also stressed that two-thirds of cancer is caused by lifestyle choices such as smoking and diet, and that many people are failing to act on this knowledge. The report pointed out that 24 percent of Americans smoke. About the same percentage do not eat the recommended minimum of five servings of FRUITS and VEGETABLES a day, which REDUCES THE RISK OF CANCER AND HEART DISEASE. ........ The result is expensive. ``The National Institutes of Health estimate for overall cost of cancer in the year 2000 is at an all time high of $180.2 billion (U.S. dollars),'' the report said.
