President Clinton:

 

I am contacting you in regard to Senator Frank Murkowski's column in The

Washington Post, which called for opening up the Arctic National

Wildlife Refuge to oil exploration. President-elect Bush says this is

going to be one of his priorities.

 

Even though you will be president for only a few more weeks, you can

still designate the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge a National Monument,

which would forever protect this pristine wilderness from oil drilling

and other commercial development.

 

I urge you to make this the last great environmental act of your

presidency and designate this area a National Monument.
