Guest guest
URGENT: MORE BAD NEWS ON WHALES +ACEAIQAh- - Sandy Abels +ADw-grwhales+AEA-mindspring.com+AD4- Thursday, December 14, 2000 9:45 PM More Bad News Today it was reported that negotiations between the Parliament of British Columbia and the Nu-chah-nulth have broken down. The Nu-chah-nulth have been threatening to pursue their Whaling rights along with the Makah. However, the Nu-chah-nulth want to kill 1000 whales PER YEAR. The Tribe was asking the Parliament for a whale quota less than 1000 if they would be given land ten times more than what the Parliament was offering. Negotiations have broken down and we are currently trying to find out more information. For those in Seattle King 5 news is airing a story at 11 pm. Aside from the Nu-chah-nulth wanting to kill 1000 whales in our shared waters, they have made it abundantly clear that they can get +ACQ-500,000 to +ACQ-1 million PER WHALE from Japan. The Makah have also stated that they want to sell their kills to Japan and Norway. In the US they can't sell whale products. However, the Makah could potlatch their kills to the Nu-chah-nulth and they in turn can sell to Japan. Canada is not a member of the IWC and therefore aren't hampered by the ban on commercial whaling. What we have been predicting is slowly coming true. The Makah have started a deadly trend. It becomes more important than ever to stop the Makah Whale hunt. Many times I have heard that +ACI-it's only one whale+ACI- or +ACI-they can only kill a total of 20 and that won't hurt the whale population+ACI- or +ACI-you should focus on bigger threats.+ACI- It's what that ONE whale represents (aside from the fact that not one whale should die anywhere for any reason). We live in a world where no whales should die or be held hostage for a piece of land. I'll keep you all posted on what is happening up north. In the meantime, let's continue to contact Cathy Campbell and Rolland Schmitten on the Public Hearings on the Environmental Assessment. If we can show the negative human impact we can stop the hunt in it's track.
