Stevens Vows To Block Rule Intended To Protect Sea Lions

 

Senate Appropriations Chairman Stevens, siding with Alaska's pollock

fishing industry, vowed Tuesday to delay federal efforts to aid the

dwindling Steller sea lion population in the waters near Alaska.

In comments to reporters, Stevens renewed his threat to attach language

to an appropriations bill that would delay a federal decision prohibiting

pollock fishing near the sea lions' habitat in the Bering Sea and Gulf of

Alaska.

Clinton " can keep vetoing bills, but the Steller sea lion provision is

going to be in there, " Stevens said.

He added that " if Congress doesn't do something " the pollock fishing

moratorium would stand. " It's a very serious thing for a senator from

Alaska, " Stevens declared.

Stevens has been negotiating a compromise with Commerce Secretary

Mineta. So far, the provision has not been inserted into the FY2001

Labor-HHS Appropriations bill, according to the Senate Appropriations panel

Dear Honorable Senator Stevens,

 

We are requesting you kindly to stop the trawling fishing industry to

fish in Steller Sea Lions critical habitat area.

 

If the government continues to let trawling fishing industry to fish in

Steller Sea Lions critical Habitat area (the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska

areas) and make the population of this very endangered Steller Sea Lions

continue to dwindle towards extinction, we will have to take action to

strongly advise all of our relatives, friends, all members, all local

grocery stores, super markets, all local restaurants, all consumers unions,

and associations to stop buying all of the fish and fish products that come

from ALASKA State because Alaska fish industry are pushing a magnificent

species to the extinction!

 

The Steller Sea Lions population has declined from 140,000 decades ago

to less than 16,000 today, mostly as a result of over-fishing in sea lions

habitat. A recent U.S. Federal court ruling mandated the cessation of

groundfish trawling in sea lion habitat in order to reverse this deadly

trend. Because this is the LAST CHANCE for the Steller Sea Lions species!

 

We are grateful to you for your kindness, compassion and your urgent

action to stop all trawling fishing industry to fish in Steller Sea Lions

Habitat area. Your help for Steller Sea Lions plight will work both ways.
