20-20 MILK DIOXIN STORY - ABC'S JOHN STOSSEL

 

Nov. 3 - Is it socially responsible for an ice cream company to

decry the ill effects of a chemical, congratulate itself for removing it

from the packaging, but fail to mention that the chemical exists in

its product?

 

In his " Give Me a Break! " column, 20/20's John Stossel speaks

to Ben & Jerry's Director of Social Mission Liz Bankowski to

investigate the company's campaign against the chemical dioxin.

 

To a company that professes to be socially responsible and

concerned about the creation and consumption of dioxin in the

environment without mentioning that the substance is in

their product, Stossel says, " Give Me a Break! "

Dear Friends,

 

I've used all of my willpower NOT to tell you about this story earlier.

Tonight's TV story will hammer an enormous nail in the dairy industry's

coffin. It's too late for the dairy industry to kill this broadcast!

 

Three years ago, I reported that there were UNSAFE levels of dioxins

in milk and dairy products.

 

Two years ago, the World Health Organization revealed that 90% of the

dioxins entering the human body come from milk and meat products

that we eat. (The avertage American eats 5 ounces per day of meat

and 29.2 ounces per day of milk and dairy).

 

Last year, the dairy industry closed in Belgium for one month because

milk samples were found to contain 100 times the safe level of dioxins.

 

Six months ago, Steve Milloy, owner of the JUNKSCIENCE.COM

website attempted to contradict me by testing milk samples for the

presence of dioxins. (he has attempted to ridicule my NOTMILK

information on numerous occasions). Milloy invested thousands of

dollars and tested Ben & Jerry's vanilla ice cream. His finding:

The ice cream contained 200 times the safe level of dioxins!

 

Milloy learned about the power of the milk processors. He incorrectly

assumed that his " discovery " would make headline news. His press

release was picked up by only one newspaper, the Detroit Free Press.

 

Tonight America learns about the reality of dioxins, and ABC's John

Stossel of 20-20 is the prime-time reporter. Check your local listings.

 

The higher up one is on the food chain, the more concentrated are the

levels of dioxins and other toxic substance in that animal's flesh and

body fluids.

 

Twelve pounds of milk are required to manufacture one pound of ice

cream.

 

Is Ben & Jerry's delicious?

 

Some say that " it's to die for! "

 

My prediction: Stossel will attempt to portray dioxins as
