~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please drop cruel animal acts!
Dear Mr. Sokolov,
I am outraged that Simon Property Group has been
hosting elephant rides and circuses, including Clyde
Beatty-Cole Bros. and Carson & Barnes. I urge you to
drop these cruel acts.
In five separate incidents, Beatty-Cole’s elephants
have killed two spectators, injured more than a dozen
others, and rampaged during performances, causing tens
of thousands of dollars in property damage. A humane
investigator found neglectful conditions at Carson &
Barnes, including failure to treat bloody injuries and
ponies with open, draining sores who were still being
ridden. Carson & Barnes was recently forced to cancel
two shows after fire officials deemed its tent unsafe.
Non-domesticated animals are inherently dangerous and
unpredictable. Elephant rides put young children at
serious risk of injury. The danger has become so
critical that the American Zoo and Aquarium
Association has advised zoological facilities to
discontinue elephant rides. Both circuses have had
tigers escape from their cages evoking panic in the
neighborhood and terrifying circus goers.
The circus industry depletes free-living elephant
populations and robs elephants of their families,
freedom, and natural habitat. Elephants are typically
chained and exotic cats, bears, and primates are kept
in small cages between shows and during transport
throughout the performance season, which lasts up to
50 weeks a year. Training methods often incorporate
whips, sharp bullhooks, and electrical shocking
devices to assert dominance and ensure that the
animals perform the specified trick on command.
I urge you not to support an industry that hauls
animals around to shopping malls where they are
subjected to ridicule and abuse. Please adopt a policy
prohibiting elephant rides and circuses with animal
acts at any of your malls.
Sincerely,
