Chief Jim Hughes of the Miami Township Fire Department said the boy apparently died at about 9:30 a.m. of several bite wounds. A relative shot the female animal to death almost immediately, the chief said. The boy, who had been visiting his grandmother, wandered into the area where the animal was chained before any adults realized what had happened, Hughes said. The youngster was identified as Oberem Burgin, of Cincinnati, in a release from Hamilton County Sheriff Simon Leis. The sheriff said the case would remain under investigation to determine if any criminal charges would be filed. The fire chief said his station was just across the street from the home and emergency units were on the scene right after they were contacted. " The boy was just barely alive when we arrived — I could detect a faint heartbeat, " he said. Hughes said that because the home was in a non-zoned rural area, there were no legal restrictions against keeping the hybrid as a pet as long as it remained chained.
