Please do not sponsor animal abuse

Dear Ms. Moody,

I was outraged when I learned that the African

American Cultural Alliance of Virginia Beach is again

promoting the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo. When a

local community-based organization that focuses on

educating children endorses an exploitative, violent,

and cruel activity like a rodeo, the wrong message is

sent to youngsters.

The Bill Pickett Invitational rodeo includes

calf-roping, a notoriously callous event. In this

event, calves, running at speeds of up to 27 miles per

hour, are jerked off their feet by ropes thrown around

their necks. They often suffer paralysis, throat and

neck injuries, or broken bones. Many die.

It's a cruel irony that an organization dedicated to

educating and nurturing young people finds it

acceptable to promote an event that tortures and kills

young cows. If an event treated puppies or kittens the

way that rodeos do calves, responsible organizations,

including the African American Cultural Alliance of

Virginia Beach would distance themselves out of

concern about the impression that violently

mistreating animals would leave on our children.

Ravaging the weak, exploiting the innocent, and

destroying lives for " fun " these acts do not

represent values that an organization concerned with

the physical and emotional health of children should

be promoting.

I urge the African American Cultural Alliance of

Virginia Beach to distance itself from calf-roping and

the rodeo.

Sincerely,
