BACKGROUND

---------------------

Immediate Action Alert from United Poultry Concerns

Protest Chicken Roping, Sunday, October 15th.

The " chicken roping " is part of the 11th Annual

Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium in Ruidoso Downs, New

Mexico.

The roping consists of a " chicken dropper " dropping a

hen or a rooster onto the arena ground. Then the bird

is chased around by a " header " and a " heeler. " The

header uses a rope to lasso the chicken around the

neck. The heeler lassoes the bird by the legs. The

goal is to tie up the bird by his or her neck and feet

like a sack of meal. A bird may be used more than

once.

Please demand cancellation of this cruel and degrading

" entertainment. "

HUMANE COMMUNITY CALLS ON HUBBARD MUSEUM TO CANCEL

CHICKEN ROPING

" COMPETITION "

Cowardly, Cruel, Unmanly: Chicken " Cowboys " Stoop to

Sickly Stunts

Machipongo, VA - United Poultry Concerns has formally

requested The Hubbard Museum of the American West to

cancel its sponsorship of the chicken roping scheduled

for Sunday October 15 at the Ruidoso Downs race track.

The event, which is part of the 11th Annual Lincoln

County Cowboy Symposium in New Mexico, degrades the

cowboy tradition to dotage. We urge the Museum to

divorce itself from roping chickens and to cancel the

cockamaniac event immediately.

Chicken roping consists of chasing around, lassoing,

and binding both the head and the feet of hens and

roosters for entertainment. Joe Rhodes of Joe's Boot

Shop in Muleshoe, Texas, sponsor of the chicken

roping, told UPC president Karen Davis that roping

chickens is a " children's game " necessary to bolster

the " cowboy way of life. "

Chicken roping signals that the cowboy tradition,

whatever it was, is now in serious decay in lieu of

significant satisfactions. Before it becomes a

national animal rights publicity campaign, we urge the

Museum to cancel the chicken roping.

If cowboys are going to bully birds who have done them

no harm, United Poultry Concerns will publicize their

cowardice. Grown men and women who think it's cute

chasing and tying up terrified birds below their boots

with little ropes, calling their cowbaby gags a

" competition, " are saying: " I don't respect myself or

other living beings. I lack dignity and empathy. I'm

not a stud. I'm a dud. "

The Museum should drop the chicken roping and support

clean fun not mean fun. We hope for a humanely

educated response from the Museum.

Mr. Bruce Eldredge, President

The Hubbard Museum of the American West

PO Box 40

Ruidoso Downs, NM 88346

Dear Mr. Eldredge:

I am writing to you on behalf of our 10,000 members

nationwide to ask you to cancel The Hubbard Museum's

sponsorship of the chicken roping scheduled for

October 15, 2000. Our investigation shows that the

chicken roping consists of lassoing and binding both

the head and the feet of hens and roosters for

entertainment. This is moronic and inhumane. United

Poultry Concerns is asking the Museum to remove the

chicken roping from the program immediately. Roping

chickens is not part of a cowboy's or anyone else's

heritage, and if it were, it would not be justified.

The chicken roping will be an animal rights publicity

campaign if it is not cancelled. We have already

requested Joe Rhodes of Joe's Boot Shop to drop the

shop's sponsorship of the event. However, the Museum

has the authority to act intelligently and responsibly

over and above Mr. Rhodes. I am asking you to do this

now. Please cancel the chicken roping.

I look forward to a response from you as soon as

possible.

Sincerely,

Karen Davis, PhD

President
