Joe McGimpsey, on administrative leave since July, returned to work two weeks ago as a correctional officer, prison spokeswoman Patricia Woolcock said. " That seemed to be the most appropriate sanction for the action,'' Woolcock said. Prison Superintendent Dick Morgan would not elaborate on his reasons for deciding to reduce the veteran officer in rank, which also cuts his pay. " It's a pretty severe outcome,'' Morgan said Saturday. McGimpsey, an American Indian, is related to members of the Makah Whaling Commission, the panel that oversees the Neah Bay tribe's whaling efforts. An officer confiscated the whaling device from an unidentified prison employee as he was leaving the prison, Deputy Superintendent Gary Fleming said at the time of the May incident. An ``employee conduct report'' against a second prison worker involved in the tool's production was dismissed, officials said earlier without providing details. ***** JAPAN STEPS OVER THE LINE? ------------------------ >From U.S. Citizens Against Whaling Several weeks ago, despite global condemnation, Japan sent out it's whaling fleet and killed a Sperm whale, 4 Bryde's whales and 6 Minke whales. Japan is exploiting the IWC loophole of science to ensure that they continue to have whale meat in their markets. The Department of Commerce today has certified Japan as violating conservation law. This is the first step in a long process. The next step is the task force, that has been formed to discuss options available under the Pelly Amendment, has 60 days to discuss options and send their recommendations to the President. The agencies involved are the Department of State, Dept of Commerce, Dept of Interior, Council on Environmental Quality and other White House Interoffice Agencies that are concerned about Japan's whaling. These agencies need to hear from U.S. citizens that economic sanctions are the only appropriate response. We have 60 days to make a difference. Email is good, but phone calls are better. A phone call means someone has to pick up the phone and have a conversation. Emails are too easy to ignore and delete. Make sure contacts are positive, but be firm that economic sanctions are the only appropriate action. They are working towards a solution on how to deal with Japan and need our support. SHE DOESN'T GET IT, AND NEVER HAS ------ (Another reason the Japanese don't take the U.S. seriously) " Whale hunting is controversial in the environmental community, and the United States opposes commercial whaling. But the age-old cultural traditions of the Inuit and Makah which are built around sustainable whaling also ought to weigh in the balance. In these cases, we felt they ought to have a heavy weight indeed.
