Guest guest
SEA SHEPHERD INTERNATIONAL for immediate release September 14, 2000 PRESIDENT CLINTON: WIN THIS ONE FOR THE WHALES - U.S. must defy WTO threat and sanction Japan Secretary of Commerce Norman Mineta's decision yesterday to clear the way for President Clinton to embargo Japanese fishery products in response to Japan's expanding " research " whale hunt has put the Clinton Administration in a fish-or-cut-bait position. Japan has threatened to file a complaint against the U.S. at the World Trade Organization should Clinton levy trade sanctions. Throughout his administration, the President has repeatedly failed to impose sanctions against Norway, Japan, and Canada when they have been certified as engaging in whale hunts that have undermined the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling. " If President Clinton wants to be remembered for an environmental legacy, he will act now and impose a full array of trade embargoes against Japan, " said Sea Shepherd president Paul Watson. " It should also be made clear that the sanctions are being levied against Japan's entire so-called 'research' whaling program, not just its recent expansion into the North Pacific, all of which must be halted before embargoes would be lifted. " Since 1977, Sea Shepherd has rammed or sunk ten whaling and fishing vessels that it has found killing whales, dolphins and endangered marine species in violation of international conservation law. ___________________________ ACT NOW: PRESIDENT CLINTON: SANCTION JAPAN!
