Chips

 

sometimes

when you write

a good poem

people expect you

to write

good poems

all the time

but what they don't

realise

is that sometimes

the chips are down

and the chip shop

is shut

like now

 

and it won't

open

until tomorrow

when this poem

is forgotten

Last night

I dragged

four poems

screaming

from the

aftermath

of a bottle

of cider

 

they didn't

want

to come

and this

morning

I'm paying

for them

with

my guts

as a vegetarian

I sometimes go to

my local

health food store

and it never

ceases to amaze me

how unhealthy

most of their

customers look

 

and the staff

don't look

much better

either

Wolf on the Third Floor, by Graham High

This is a collection of poems about Russia. Some tell of the author's recent marriage, and his feelings of unease, others offer descriptions of the landscape and cities, and a few are historical.

There's some clever and thoughtful writing about the subject, with an added pinch of humour - " Crows form hunger demonstrations among skeletal trees/in the snow-heaped space between apartments " and overall this booklet makes for an unusual, even bizarre, read.
