Guest guest
URGENT NEWS ADVISORY Saturday / May 6, 2000 (7:31 a.m.) WHALE HUNT ON AGAIN; MOTHERS, CALVES AT RISK NEAH BAY, WA - As of about 7 a.m. Saturday (5/6/00), Makah hunters have again begun to hunt gray whales off the coast here, according to an on-scene report by Ocean Defense International, which is monitoring the hunt. " There are large swells, and the weather is going bad, but there are definitely some whales here, " said Jonathan Paul, on board the ODI vessel " Avocet. " Paul reported that several other whale defense vessels were in the area, along with Coast Guard boats and air cover. Whale researchers last week noted that the most of the gray whales have passed the area on their northward migration, and that mainly mothers and their calves remain - making them vulnerable to the harpoons and high powered rifles used by the Makah. Several ODI crew members are not on board - they were in Seattle Friday for a hearing regarding their arrest in April for allegedly interfering with the hunt.
