Guest guest
NEWS ADVISORY Wednesday / May 3, 2000 Only Mothers, Babies Remain For Makah Whalers To Kill; Protesters Stay on Alert NEAH BAY, WA - Whale researchers revealed today that the Makah whalers have missed their chance to kill a whale this Spring - unless they want to shoot a mother and her calves. " We remain on alert, but we are being told that the Makah will have to slaughter a mother whale or her baby, which makes the specter of this hunt even more grotesque , " said Jonathan Paul, captain of the Ocean Defense International anti-whaling expedition. ODI, whose crew member Erin Abbott was seriously injured when a Coast Guard boat ran her over during a demonstration two weeks ago, said its vessels are still patrolling the waters here on the lookout for hunters. But, Paul said he's been told by three whale researchers that they have not spotted any whales this week, and that only " moms and calves " are going through. According to whale researcher John Calabokidis of Cascadia Research, the northern migration of Gray whales has already traveled past the area where the Makah whalers are presently hoping to kill up to five gray whales, and are already near Alaskan waters. Calabokidis said that if the Makah wanted to kill a whale they should have hunted in March of 2000. Jim Darling and Paul Spong - two other well-respected gray whale researchers - agree with that assessment. -30-
