ANTI-WHALING ACTIVIST RELEASED Monday, April 24, 2000 (AP and KIRO TV, Seattle) (Tacoma-AP) -- An anti-whaling activist who suffered a broken shoulder when a Coast Guard boat ran over her jet ski during a Makah whale hunt was released on her own recognizance Monday after an initial appearance in federal court in Tacoma. 24-year-old Erin Abbott, of Seattle, is charged with violating an exclusionary zone around Makah tribal members in a canoe who were hunting gray whales last week off the northwestern tip of Washington state. She allegedly buzzed the canoe and sprayed water on the whalers before a Coast Guard boat moved in and mowed her down. A federal magistrate scheduled a preliminary hearing for Abbott on May 5th, when prosecutors will present findings of probable cause. Abbott has not yet entered a plea. The Makah have not yet killed a whale during a spring hunt. They did not hunt over the weekend or Monday. Last spring, the tribe killed its first whale in about 70 years as a means of reviving the tribal culture.
