Guest guest
April 22, 2000 SECOND ACTIVIST SUBPOENAED TO TESTIFY BEFORE FEDERAL GRAND JURY IN PORTLAND INVESTIGATING ELF/ALF ACTIVITY PORTLAND, OR: A federal grand jury convened in Portland has subpoenaed a second individual, Josh Harper, as part of its investigation into the underground activities of the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) and Animal Liberation Front (ALF). The subpoena commands Mr. Harper to appear before the grand jury this coming Monday, April 24 at 9:00am. Mr. Harper, who works with Ocean Defense International currently fighting the Makah whale hunt, was on the water in the Olympic Peninsula when he was issued the subpoena. Harper stated, " I was on a boat attempting to sabotage a whale hunt off the Olympic Peninsula when the vessel was surrounded by two coast guard Zodiacs and one coast guard cutter. They claimed to be boarding the boat in order to issue me a warning for violating the marine mammal protection act, but once on board issued me the subpoena. " When asked his feelings on the grand jury subpoena, Mr. Harper replied, " The FBI, who are unable to catch members of the ELF, have decided to use this grand jury to harass above ground activists. Their motives are clear:; to disrupt any activities which interfere with the capital gain of large corporations. " A protest in support of Mr. Harper against this federal grand jury is scheduled for Monday in front of the US Federal Courthouse (1000 SW Third Ave.)in Portland beginning at 8:00am. On April 26, Craig Rosebraugh, the only other known activist to have been subpoenaed by this grand jury, has been commanded to return. There he faces contempt charges for not cooperating with the grand jury proceedings.
