Guest guest
===== A message from the 'makahwhaling' discussion list ===== FROM WASHINGTON CITIZEN'S COASTAL ALLIANCE Sekiu, WA 6:10am Reports from both media and on-site activists indicate that the Makah whaling team is not on the water this morning. Aerial shots confirm that the canoe (with U.S. Coast Guard " hunting escort " ) has not been launched. Ocean Defense International is on scene with several vessels, and will remain throughout the day. Bill Moss of the World Whale Police remains in Federal custody in Tacoma, WA. ***** STUCK AT HOME? CAN'T MAKE IT HERE? YOU CAN HELP! ----- Folks, help us with the following item- be as busy and aggressive as you can possibly be! It is of vital importance to our efforts here, and YOU CAN HELP! Any media outlet- TV, radio, or print- that continues to use the phrase " IWC-approved hunt " in reference to the Makah hunt needs to be bombarded with calls- a LOT of them. The Makah hunt is NOT approved by the IWC, and this flagrant lie needs to be put to rest once and for all. It is important that the citizens of this country (and beyond) be given the correct information by the media. Here are two items you should use in your efforts: 1.) E-mail from Dr. Ray Gambell, Secretary to the Commission, International Whaling Commission, 5 October 1998: " The IWC has specifically not passed a judgement on recognising or otherwise the claim by the Makah Tribe, since the member nations were CLEARLY UNABLE TO AGREE. " 2.) Statement on Aboriginal Subsistence Whaling, by the Australian Delegation to the IWC, 23 October 1997: " The Australian delegation made it clear that it accepted the Chukotka Natives' request and claim clearly met the requirments of the successful amendment... whereas the request and claim of the Makah people did not. THIS VIEW WAS ENDORSED EXPLICITLY BY A CLEAR MAJORITY OF THE DELEGATIONS participating in the debate of record... The Australian delegation makes it clear that after a lapse of some 71 years of whale hunting by the Makah... THE REQUIREMENTS of the amendment are not met. NOR HAVE THEY BEEN MET ON CULTURAL GROUNDS... The Australian delegation has noted a News Release issued by the United States delegation which claims that the Commission has: adopted a quota that allows a five year aboriginal subsistence hunt by the Makah... and recognised the cultural and subsistence need of the Makah Tribe. THE AUSTRALIAN DELEGATION EXPLICITLY REJECTS THESE CLAIMS AS FALSE AND GIVING AN ENTIRELY ERRONEOUS INTERPRETATION. Clearly the Commission... has recognised the claims of the Chukotka Natives but not those of the Makah people. " Should you need more information, or if we can assist in getting complete statements to any media outlet, contact us. Now, get to work and let's get the truth out to the people! Especially important are Seattle area TV stations, the Seattle Times and P-I, and the Peninsula Daily News in Port Angeles. Go get them! ***** _______________ The simple way to read all your emails at ThatWeb http://www.thatweb.com
