Please Note: Most news reporters perpetuate a

misunderstanding that the International Whaling Commission

sanctioned the hunt. The facts:

 

+ At the 1997 IWC meeting in Monaco, NOAA's James Baker

made a " side deal " with Russian delegates to trade

endangered Bowhead whales from the Inuit quota (five

grays), unilaterally allocating five grays to the Makah

+ At the same meeting, IWC delegates passed a non-binding

resolution opposing the Makah hunt.
