Helping to safe a Natural Reserve

ENGLISH - INGLES

-----

Dear Friend,

As you may know, Isla de Ometepe, on Lake Nicaragua, is the largest fresh Water Island on the planet. The island has a wide range of habitats including rare cloud forest, humid forest and dry forest. Isla de Ometepe is home to many unique species of plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. This is partly due to the combination of both fertile soil and high elevation on the island's two volcanos.

Currently there is a grave situation unfolding on Isla de Ometepe. As you have previously shown interest for the welfare of this beautiful and biologically distinct island we wanted to inform you about this urgent threat to the forest on the island. This emergency deserves your immediate attention.

In March of 1999, MARENA, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (of Nicaragua), passed a law declaring the entire island a natural reserve. This law prohibits the sale or destruction of any existing land on the island. A few months ago this law was broken. Mario Ortiz, the mayor of Altagracia, the largest city on Isla de Ometepe, is selling thousands of hectares of primary forest to a few large coffee farmers. Where the profits of these land sales go, no one knows. The environmental laws have been broken and the integrity of Isla de Ometepe is slowly sinking. These actions must be stopped.

MARENA acknowledges Ortiz’s negligence of these laws but has taken little action thus far. With your help we might expedite legal enforcement. Compared to other nations in Latin America, Nicaragua still has a large portion of its forests intact. It is crucial that we demonstrate to MARENA that environmental legislation must be enforced immediately. We urge you to continue your support of the island by pressuring MARENA to take action against the mayor.

Please write or call MARENA and briefly explain that you are aware of the situation at hand and demand that MARENA take action immediately. If you know of anyone else that might be interested in our cause please forward this email.
