Guest guest
It's been curious to watch news coverage of this event in Britain, and pick up some news from American broadcasting channels. There seems to be a wide difference relating to the coverage. Some think the police overreacted, others think it was just a demo used as a pretext for violence. Personally, I think if I was peacefully demonstrating, then seeing armoured personnel carriers, and then getting sprayed, then I don't think I'd be standing there smiling. We had a similar demo in London, which more predictably ended in violence. The usual scenario; demo starts off peacefully, police stop demonstrators. Anarchists retaliate, and mayhem ensues, with everyone caught up in it. There's always likely to be some hotheads who go on demos as a reason for attacking the police, so it's convenient for right wingers to rope in everyone as a troublemaker, thus the reasons behind the demo are lost. It didn't work this time, though. - P.
