Guest guest
Hi All, Last week, I witnessed a big turtle being shelled alive for food in a live market store in San Francisco's Chinatown. The address is 1135 #15, Stockton St, San Francisco. It was horrible watching the turtle struggling and trying to get away even after all of its bloody organs were exposed, after the shell was violently cleaved away. I kept asking them to please chop the head off. The other giggling worker kept saying the slaughterer enjoys doing things this way, adding more as an excuse that killing it too soon would make it not as fresh. The slaughterer wouldn't chop the head off until the very end when he was ready to pack the turtle, after which he also had to chop the rest into pieces. I contacted Animal Care and Control. They didn't have any former history of this store on record, which shocked me as many articles have been written years ago about a store that sounded identical to this one, which had live chickens and birds in the back, as well as bull frogs. The ACC gave them a warning and provided them a copy of the law in Chinese. They can't issue a citation until someone reports a complaint to them again. I hope someone else can continue to monitor the store, since I've already yelled at the store owner and the slaughterer out of exasperation before leaving, so they know me already. I doubt the slaughterer would stop what his co-slaughterer said he "likes" to do. When I kept asking him why he doesn't chop the head off first, he turned around and said to me with a sick smirk, "You eat it and you'll like it." If you happen to be in the area and want to monitor this store (or perhaps another one) and if you see the same thing happening, please report to Animal Care and Control at 415-554-9400. Also report to the California Fish and Game Department at 1-888-334-2258. The ACC can only enforce the Penal Code, which is weaker; they can't enforce the Fish and Game Code. The Fish and Game Dept. on the other hand tend not to have enough wardens to do anything. Therefore, to cover all bases, both agencies need to be contacted. If you report, please kindly drop me a line, too. "In 2000, AB 2479 was signed into law; it allowed frogs, turtles and birds, which make up the majority of animals sold at live markets, to be protected under California animal cruelty statutes. The cruelty statute prohibits stores from storing and displaying animals in ways likely to result in injury, starvation, or suffocation. It also prohibits stores from skinning and dismembering live animals." -- HSUS Here is an article written some time ago about live markets in SF Chinatown: http://www.sfo.com/~animalwrites/Matts.htm The following are all the laws in California relating to animals: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/calawquery?codesection=all & codebody=animals & hits=All Best regards, Michelle 650-619-9713
Guest guest
Thank you for reporting this. I'm Chinese and I understand " culture preservation " and all, but really. Stuff like this is completely disgusting and cruel. I'll stop by the shop later this week and report them as well.
