Guest guest
HI everyone, I am overwhelmed with junk mail from animal and environmental groups seeking donations. I have a few groups I support and of, course, can't support them all! I'm in the process of writing everyone now and asking to be taken off their list. Is PETA selling donor name/addresses? (One great place to support is Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary in Florida. 100% of the money goes to the monkeys and it's a pure veg community) Thanks, Amy (drowning in junk mail)

" You have my sympathies! Unfortunately it seems like too many nonprofit groups (even the environmental ones) sell/exchange their mailing lists. I have not had problems with PETA selling my name/address before, but I have had this issue with other animal groups. This comes up periodically, so for those interested, I've shared some of my ideas/insights here: http://www.generationv.org/index.php?blog=6 & title=junk_mail As a FYI, Bay Area Vegetarians does not share its mailing address of donors, and as far as the email addresses of rs to our various lists, we do not share those, either. In fact, our website event calendar is specifically written to prevent spammers from grabbing organizers email addresses. Guest guest
It's sometimes very difficult to get off a list because often that list was bought/traded/rented so asking the buyer/trader/renter won't get you off the original list that's being sold/traded/rented. I handle the mailing list for Paw PAC and the request not to have one's name sold/traded/rented to others is very common. We don't do it and say so in our annual mailings. People appreciate it. When you give money, ask specifically that they not share your name. Some orgs accommodate that request because of this very problem that turns off donors. By the way, if the group can afford to send out the mass mailings (and pay a good percentage to the mailing house), it often means that the org doesn't need your money, and certainly not as much as local groups run primarily by volunteers. People call me asking which of the many mailings they received they should respond to. I tell them the ones who need you the most don't necessarily have the money to send mass mailings. And if a mass mailing tells you of a terrible animal abuse with the only solution being to send them money, I am turned off. All these mailings are the same - 2 double sided pages, your name inserted in the text, some blue ink to make you think somebody signed it individually...... Our movement is a victim of its own success.
