Guest guest
Hi all, Just had au unexpectedly positive interchange with a co-worker which had the obvious and immediate effect of broadening his horizon and, hopefully, improving his health, the environment and saving some animals from a brutal life/slaughter. While microwaving my Morningstar veggie burger (not a plug), he commented on how good it smelled and asked what it was. My reply amazed him. Now even more curious he inquired about what special store I bought it. When informed that it was none other than my " friendly " neighrborhood Safeway, his surprise increased dramatically. Rather than dive into a speech about vegetarianism and/or animal welfare/rights, factory farming, pollution and such, all I said a couple of times in an off-handed, matter-of-fact manner was that it is healthier than eating meat. Even offered him an opportunity to try one of mine if he cared to. Okay, so I may not have made an instant convert or converts (he and his wife are expecting their first child). But who knows where this might lead. And if one such brief and casual encounter can potentially lead to results for our cause, then what effect would a full-blown vegan spread have? And all this comes from a highly suspicious, cynical, pessimistic, fatalistic soul who has for the most part given up on humanity. Let me tell you that working in downtown Oakland and employed by a County agency dealing exlusively with criminals does notnhing for my morale nor does it infuse me with much confidence about the world's future. And so this one incident has provided me at least a glimmer of hope. Anyway, just thought I would share this with everyone.
