Guest guest
Hi folks! If you are planning to attend this, please please RSVP so we can plan accordingly. I have had quite a few people tell me separately that they're coming but not all are reflected in the RSVPs. So, if you are coming, or think you may be coming, please RSVP appropriately. This is a great opportunity to learn and share with others, as well as just connect with other like-minded folks. http://www.evite.com//cl_jan2006 Alex Bury (a wonderful chef & activist) has volunteered to bring some yummy vegan refreshments. We also need a headcount for materials. Walk-ins are fine, but RSVPs appreciated to help us plan. Below is more info on the event. Cheers, Tammy Bay Area Vegetarians Bay Area Vegetarians' Compassionate Living program examines and presents information related to vegetarianism and living a compassionate lifestyle. Please note - starting this year, this program happens on the 2nd Sunday of every month in SF. This Sunday we will have an interactive workshop session on Effective Advocacy for Animals: Activist Skills and Activist Rights Activist Skills: When anything is done well, it looks simple to do. Experienced local activists will share their favorite techniques and helpful tips for effective outreach by leafleting and tabling. Letter writing is another highly effective form of activism, yet one that too few people do or feel comfortable with. Letters to business leaders, legislators, or other key decision makers, letters to the editor, letters to your family about your decision to go veg -- all can have a powerful and far-reaching impact to help animals. Activist Rights: While we can learn the skills to be activists, activism can often be daunting from a legal perspective - what are our legal rights? Learn your basic rights under California law as an activist, and your right to speak out for animals in a variety of circumstances (e.g., KFC sidewalks, shopping malls, college campuses, on the web) -- so you can feel comfortable and confident when you do. This will be an informative and interactive afternoon led by local activists for the local community. It's geared towards folks who are new and want to learn, those looking for a refresher or different strategies, as well as experienced folks who want to share strategies to help animals. Our presenters include: - Suzanne Haws has been active in Vegan Outreach's Adopt-A-College program for over a year. She's visited nearly 30 college campuses and handed out over 20,000 anti-factory-farming leaflets directly to students. -Nora Kramer is an experienced and passionate advocate for animals. She volunteers with the Empathy Project and does humane education presentations at local schools and runs the BAARN list, Bay Area Animal Rights Network. -Tammy, Bay Area Vegetarians' President/co-founder and List Owner for SFBAVEG, has been doing veg outreach and advocacy for animals since 1990. She's written letters, held protest signs, leafleted, and marched, but tabling is her favorite form of advocacy. She'll share her favorite techniques, tips, and strategies for successful tabling. -Thea Langsam is a lawyer at Altshuler, Berzon, a small public interest law firm in San Francisco. She represents Vegan Outreach, challenging colleges that have illegally sought to bar Vegan Outreach volunteers from leafleting on campus. She also organizes the San Francisco KFC Cruelty protests and Letter Writing Parties for Bay Area Vegetarians, which typically happen on the 3rd weekend of every month. To be a vegetarian is to disagree--to disagree with the course of things today. Starvation, world hunger, cruelty, waste, wars--we must make a statement against these things. Vegetarianism is my statement and I think it's a strong one." -- Isaac Bashevis Singer
