I lived in Japan in 1981 for six months. I was a lacto-vegetarian at

the time-not vegan.

It was really hard to be out. I carried food with me from grocery

stores. I lived off tupperware

containers of white rice, miso soup, tofu, veggies, and fruit. For

dinner outings, it was cucumber

sushi or cheese pizza. Best is to carry your food with you at all

times. Salads are made with

eggs and little dried fish flakes or the actual fish. Even miso in

restaurants has fish flakes.

It's really hard there but if you have a kitchen, prepare your own

food. I was with a Japanese

friend who explained " vegetarian " to a few local noodle shops and they

were really good about

accomodating me. Find a place that will get to know you and accomodate

you.

Maybe you can go or write to Cha Ya in Berkeley and ask them to write

out a note in Japanese explaining your

food choices. Good luck. I know today if I was going back to Japan, it

would be white rice and pears.
