Kansinee,

I just returned from living in Japan for three years.

They don't understand 'vegan' there, so you have to

explain in Japanese that you're allergic to meat,

chicken, fish, fish sauce, eggs and milk. (they don't

think of chicken, fish or eggs as meat). Let me see if

I can recall the proper phrases to use with your

server in a restaurant:

Watashi wa allerugi des. (I have an allergy)

Damme (when you say this, make an 'X' with your hands

emphatically) niku, chicken, sakana, fishu sauca,

tamago, gnu nyu. (NO meat, chicken, fish, fish sauce,

egg or cow's milk).

Tabemasen! (I don't eat)

Gohan to yasai daijobu des. (Rice and vegetables are

okay.)

Tofu daijobu des. (Tofu is okay) (If you eat tofu...)

Demo, fishu sauce-a damme. (But no fish sauce!)

If it's a place that serves sushi, you can request

Kappa Maki (cucumber roll), Oshinko maki (pickled

daikon roll), Campio maki (squash roll). If the place

seems really modern or western, you can try and ask

them to make you Abacado Maki (avocado roll) or even

Shitake Maki, but it's likely they will look at you

with big eyes and tell you they can't make it.

Granted, this is a rather primitive way of relating

this info., but it totally safeguards you!! Just smile

and say 'wakarimaska?' and 'arigato' and it should be

fine. (do you understand? thank you.)

There is a good Indian macrobiotic restaurant in Tokyo

if you go there - you can google it.

Good luck! Email if you have any other questions. This

should take care of you in just about any

restaurant...

Best,

Andrea Kowalski
