Hi. You're probably wondering why the subject of " Bacon " on a veg

listserve. , I'm a lurker on the list and just wanted to take the time to

introduce myself. My name is Linda Bacon. I usually don't read posts - a

bit inundated on e-mails - but I do skim at least the titles just to stay

on top of local issues. I caught a reference to my name in one post and

thought you'd want to hear about the questions raised from the source.

If you want to learn about Nutrition from a veg-friendly source, come take

my class at City College of San Francisco. My emphasis is on

sustainability, and whether you approach the issue from the perspective of

personal health, environmentalism, animal welfare, etc., vegans and

vegetarians come out looking pretty good! For more details on the courses,

you can check out the website: http://fog.ccsf.cc.ca.us/~lbacon/Nutr12.html

or http://fog.ccsf.cc.ca.us/~lbacon/Nutr51.html. As was noted, my classes

fill up quickly, so if you're interested try to get in as soon as you are

able to register.

In part because traditional textbooks are so notoriously bad on issues of

sustainability, I'm writing a textbook which supplements the course. Though

the textbook is not quite complete, I do make it available to students and

the general public. It includes many veg-friendly references, including

some wonderful material from Vegan Outreach. The book can be found at

CCSF's bookstore or http://www.lulu.com/LindaBacon. (I think its

user-friendly and not just for academia.) There's a preview on-line which

gives you all the details on the book.

Every semester I invite prominent speakers to my class, and welcome the

general public as well. Previous speakers have included well-known vegans

such Michael Greger and Michele Simon, and the seminars are always a lot of

fun. You're invited to join the next seminar, which is a screening of the

documentary, the Future of Food, about genetic modification of food.

Deborah Koons-Garcia, the filmaker, will be on hand to introduce the film

and answer questions. It's Wednesday, November 16th, 11:00-1:00 at the

Diego Rivera Theater at CCSF, and is free and open to the public.

You've got a great community going here. Take care...

Linda Bacon, PhD

Nutrition Professor, CCSF
