Guest guest
Two friends of mine, Kimberly Long and Jenny Test, are driving down to help save Katrina dogs (and other animals) tomorrow. If you still have supplies left to donate and want them to go to use straight away, or can manage to donate some money to help them in this effort - please read the below email that explains their efforts, what they need, and how to donate. If you know of anyone who might donate human food and drink - the volunteers down there need food, too! (Please note: Many of the volunteers are vegetarian - so healthy food - fruit, for example, would be much appreciated.) Thanks! Kasie _______________ Thousands of animals became displaced--abandoned, lost, or forced surrenders at rescue pick-up points (they didn't let animals onto the rescue buses)--during the hurricanes. Additionally, there are hundreds, if not thousands of families in the gulf coast who have no choice but to surrender their beloved pets because they simply no longer have the resources to take care of them--home, job, even family, wiped out. Shelters all over the area are contacting rescue groups here in California, literally begging for us to come and take these animals out so they won't have to kill them in order to make room for new animals arriving daily--new animals who may yet have family frantically searching for them. Daily stories about the confusion, fear and depression and the desperate plight of these faithful family members (pets and service animals alike) are literally breaking our hearts, so we've decided to get into action. We have been helping to coordinate rescue teams from the Bay Area to go into the hurricane zones and help with animal rescue efforts. We have two teams already in the field, and the third will leave this coming Friday--Kimberly will be in that team. Michael is staying back to help coordinate the effort on this end (and hold down the home front--hey, someone has to feed our five dogs). We are working under the auspices of The Milo Foundation (www.milofoundation.org), a nationally recognized animal rescue group located here in the Bay Area, along with other groups including Berkeley Humane Society, Marin Humane Society, and SF SPCA among many others. Our teams will be relieving exhausted rescuers, helping to set up new rescue shelter facilities, and providing care and rehabilitation for rescued animals--all of the tasks of helping animal victims left behind in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and Rita. We will also be reuniting previously rescued animals with their families, and bringing animals out of the shelters of Louisiana to foster and adoption homes here in the Bay Area. Sending these teams cost money, so...we are asking for any monetary help you are able to give. You can go to the Milo Foundation website and donate via their secure Donation page: To make a tax deductible donation go to http://www.milofoundation.org/donate.cfm Important! Please put in the Notes box: For Long/Kingsbury Rescue Team Or, If you prefer to mail a donation, you can send it to us at: Michael Allaire & Kimberly Long 450 62nd Street Oakland, CA 94609 Make your checks payable to The Milo Foundation, and mark the notes section of your check: Attn. Long/Kingsbury Rescue Team Due to an outpouring of material donations, we have plenty of rescue materials. We are bringing about a ton of animal food, crates and kennels, leashes/collars/harnesses, blankets and towels, vet and people medical supplies, etc. What we need is food for our team during the trip, and fresh fruit for the volunteers who have been living at the rescue centers (preferably items that can survive a 3 day trip in a fully packed RV). We have a fridge on the RV, so if you, or someone you know can donate ready-made or home-made food that would travel well,(sandwiches or sandwich fixings, packaged foods, cheese, nuts, bread, gallons and individual bottled water, juices, snacks, PowerBars/Clif Bars, bottled coffee/tea drinks, etc.), these would be greatly appreciated, and most definitely consumed by our team and/or the people we will be joining in Louisiana. If you have any questions about what we can use for the trip, please call (number below) or email us. If you are unable to donate at this time, we understand (we will be accepting donations for this trip, and future trips, as long as there are rescue efforts going). Please keep in touch anyway--email notes of encouragement that we can convey to the rescue workers and survivors. They need a morale boost and your encouragement and prayers will make a difference too. Thank you for reading this, thank you for any and all help, and take good care.
