Guest guest
With all the recent discussion about cage free / free range eggs, I thought this might be a useful post for folks new to the issue:Terms like "cage free" or "range free" are marketing terms and do not have any standardized definitions behind them. Only 4 terms on egg label cartons have any type of standards and enforcement guidelines -Certified OrganicCertified HumaneFree FarmedAnimal Care CertifiedRead more at the HSUS website:http://www.hsus.org/farm_animals/factory_farms/the_hen_factory_farm/animal_welfare_claims_on_egg_cartons.htmlAs it is, many of the certifications aren't really that useful/helpful as far as the welfare of the chickens are concerned. Look at the investigations Compassion over Killing has done on "ACC" farms.http://www.cok.net/camp/inv/mdefi/index.phpThe "Wegman's Cruelty" documentary by Compassionate Consumers also shows very compelling undercover investigative footage.http://www.wegmanscruelty.com/Check it out .. and if you currently eat eggs, think about reducing or omitting eggs from your diet. If you don't eat eggs, think about getting involved in the campaign to banish battery cages! Like many others, I think hens in battery cages are the most abused of all the animals suffering in factory farmings....Anyone SF people want to leaflet at TJs? Very easy to pass out the leaflets when you say "Information from the Humane Society" (and HSUS supplies all materials free of charge). Would love to see this happening as a monthly or weekly activity for BAVeg - any takers?Cheers,Tammy Bay Area Vegetarianswww.BayAreaVeg.org
