Guest guest
Hi folks,As many of you know, there are local KFC Cruelty protests happening regularly throughout the Bay Area (mostly monthly) in support of PETA's nationwide campaign. PETA is asking for our help to step up the campaign to increase the pressure on KFC by targeting a specific KFC and leafleting it every day. Please read the info below which I pieced together from emails that I exchanged with Chris Overton at PETA. At this point, PETA is looking for a local organizer to make this work. This really needs someone that can focus on this campaign (which, if I weren't already committed to other activities, I think this would be a great opportunity to work & connect with others who care for animals). And, even if you don't have experience coordinating something like this before (who does!), this is a great opportunity to learn "on the job". PETA is looking for an organizer now -- they will be looking for individuals to fill shifts later. Anyone interested?? Thanks,TammyWhat are you looking for in an organizer?Reliable and motivated to make it a priority. What are the responsibilities for the organizer? 1) Send out an email asking activists in the city if they'll sign up for shifts. It involves a few hours a week at the very most. 2) Make sure they get their leaflets and posters ( I can send plenty of leaflets to the organizer and even send leaflets to individual activists, though that would be a little more expensive) 3) An email reminder or call needs to be sent to people who have shifts coming up every day (once the schedule is in place, this will only require a few minutes each day). 4) Take a few shifts 5) Submit a short weekly report that keeps us updated on how everything is going. (Whether or not everybody came for their assigned shift, any problems with the police, anything else pertinent)I asked Chris to compare this to our current strategy of leafleting different KFCs monthly around the Bay Area. His perspective:I think it's important that we get people at one KFC every day. Doing this really hurts that particular KFC's business after a little while and KFC headquarters takes notice of that. This also causes the franchisee to put more pressure on Yum!. For a while we had a hard time gauging the effectiveness of demonstrating at several KFCs versus focusing on one, but with our daily leafletings we've noticed a marked difference in their business that we never noticed before. Several KFCs have closed as a result of daily leafletings and activists who bring video to demos. What advice to picking a KFC to target?Focus as much as possible on one very busy KFC (preferably a walk-in where the entrance is right on the sidewalk). Perhaps in one or two cities to start with, like San Francisco and Oakland. When are you trying to get this started? We'd like to start in October. Email sent out to Norfolk people about this new strategy, which could be used for organizing locally. PETA is starting a new phase in its effort to improve life for chickens raised on the factory farms and killed in the slaughterhouses that supply KFC restaurants. It's imperative to focus our efforts and hit KFC in a truly meaningful way. That is why we're trying to organize a one hour leafleting every day in front the KFC at [fill in address of busy KFC w/ lots of foot and vehicular traffic]. All this endeavor requires is for everyone to sign up to leaflet for one or two hours each month. If animal activists are present every single day, people in the community surrounding the [address] KFC will see that there is something very wrong with KFC, and as a result stop patronizing its restaurants.Even if you can only commit to one day per month, we'd love to get you signed up for sometime in the month of October. All you have to do is let me know the day(s) you're available and I'll take care of the rest. If you'd like to get signed up, please just respond to this email with a specific day you'd like to go, or just let me know how many times you'd like to go in October and I'll sign you up on a day where more help is still needed. If you can't go between 6-7 PM on the weekdays or 12-1 PM on the weekends, you can still help. Those are the best times to go, but anytime you can spare would be great.Monday-Friday from 6-7 PMSaturday and Sunday from 12-1 PM How it actually works Below is the schedule that we made up. These are the people that volunteered to go on certain days, but more people show up a lot of times because it’s always during the same hour. For instance, I only signed up for one day, but I’ll go much, much more than that. I’m just not sure when. That’s why we say 6-7 PM weekdays and 1-2 PM weekends. I can count on the materials being there and all I have to do is show up and help out. Once the schedule is created, I email it to everyone who volunteered so they know when folks will be out there. In your case, you could also post the schedule on the Web site.
