Guest guest
I've been a vegetarian (lacto-ovo) for about 6 1/2 years. Over the past 1-2 years I've experienced bouts of nausea sometimes for a short period, sometimes off and on for days. I'm starting to wonder if this is related to my vegetarian diet. I each a good amout of soy and soy products. Lots of veggies, cheese and milk products. I don't take any supplements. Any similar experiences? ideas? theories? Guest guest
Christy I knew a vegetarian years back who kept getting intermittent stomach aches and nausea, sometimes severe. She had already been vegetarian about 7 or 8 years when the aches started. After a couple of years, she figured out that it was related to eating large amounts of cheese in a single sitting, such as in a veggie/cheese pizza. This led to her cutting out cheese (and other dairy) and, voila, the stomach aches disappeared, forever. Our non-professional hypothesis was that after years of being vegetarian, her stomach had somehow become more sensitive to any animal products and had become sort of lactose intolerant (even if it was possibly just psychological). We never found any scientific evidence to back up this theory, however. But the aches definitely stopped for good. If you do decrease, or cut out, dairy, you will want to take a multi-vitamin supplement unless you are sure you can get all of the B vitamins through whole food sources. It's a little tricky, but look for vitamins that do not contain gelatin, as that's not vegetarian. You might also want to consider the amount of soy products you eat. Too much can be a bad thing. Just like eating meat three times a day, or even every day, is certainly bad very for your health, so too can eating massive amounts of soy-based foods. Soy, especially highly processed soy, should be considered more of a treat than a regular staple in any diet. You might want to check out this recent article on soy for more info: http://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2005nl/april/050400.htm.
