Guest guest
April 7, 2005 Has anyone else noticed the dearth of local coverage of the Canadian seal " hunt " now underway in Newfoundland? Article after article about the Pope, Terri Schiavo, baseball and steroids, the NCAA tournament, etc., ad nauseum, but NOTHING about the slaughter. This is unconscionable. Some 360,000 harp and hooded seals are being killed as I write this, the world's largest slaughter of marine mammals. And most are BABIES, less than 3 weeks old. Independent veterinarians reported not long ago that possibly 42% of the victims were skinned while alive and conscious, often in front of their grieving mothers. Not acceptable. According to the Canadian press and the internet, 11 protesters were arrested, others beaten within the past few days. There have been on-going confrontations between sealers and protesters, and shots have been fired. HSUS has just announced a boycott of all Canadian seafood products in hopes of bringing the carnage to an end. Yet none of this is being reported in the local media. This must change. (NOTE: Patti Davis wrote a good piece in the April 6 NEWSWEEK - Google " River of Blood " ) Please call the media below, ask for the News Department, and demand that this major story be reported as it deserves. Keep calling until you get results. The baby seals are counting on you. Eric Mills, coordinator ACTION FOR ANIMALS Oakland Tribune 510/208-6300 Contra Costa Times 925/943-8235 Marin Ind.
