Guest guest
Hello all I have just started a job in Berkeley and apart from the list of restauraunts posted in the Ultimate Guide, I am not familiar with other places there. I am looking for VEGAN-friendly places to go to with co-workers to get lunch. (eg: sandwich places, other quick lunch places). I am working nearer to the freeway (Gilman St) than downtown, but would appreciate any tips. For example, VIKS on 6th st is not listed in the UG, I will add it after getting all the info.. its a great Indian vegetarian-friendly place that is OK on weekdays, but very crowded on weekends.. Hmm.. I am also wondering why places like 'Chaat house' are not listed in the UG. probably because they are only vegetarian friendly? (and the naan bread has eggs or milk in it) You can reply to me directly to veenaachar Thanks Veena
Guest guest
Hi Veena Right now there are 337 entries and 485 reviews in The Ultimate Guide, and I'm sure there are 100's more vegetarian friendly restaurants that could be added. However, there is no way we can do all this ourselves. That's where you all come in :-) The guide includes everything from Vegan to Vegetarian friendly, and you are more than welcome to add the places you mention. There's no real hard rule what we do or do not include when it comes to vegetarian friendly restaurants. Most of the time is comes down to recommendations and additions by our members or places we know personally. It also somewhat depends on what else is available in the area. If a neighborhood or city is hopping with exclusive vegetarian restaurants then there is no real need for us to add ever last place that as a veg option on the menu, but if there's nothing else around, then we welcome those entries. And I'm sure someone will thank you that you saved them from a drab meal. A good examples of this is Concord, where there are no exclusive veggie restaurants, so we list places we know to be vegetarian and vegan friendly. But there are many more cities where we need help filling the holes. The only exception to vegetarians friendly restaurants are stake houses (even if they do have a huge salad bar) and those places that also serve veal or foie gras. e.g. I'm told that Fleur de Lys has some fantastic vegan food, but they also have foie gras on the menu, and therefore are not in the guide. It's probably worth point out that we get thousands and thousands of people each month referencing and downloading the Ultimate Guide, and I'm not surprised as the San Francisco Bay Area is one of the top tourist destinations in the world, and we should be proud that we have so many vegetarian choices :-) Bottom line The Bay Area Vegetarians Ultimate Guide is only as good as what you are willing to help us make it. So please everyone, add your favorite restaurants and veggie owned businesses and tell people to download their free guides which are updated daily :-) www.bayareaveg.org/freeguide Take care Chris Bay Area Vegetarians DEGRADE - HELP US SPREAD THE VEG MESSAGE AT SF PRIDE http://www.bayareaveg.org/vegpride05 Veena Achar [veenaachar] Wednesday, March 09, 2005 10:06 PMsfBAVeg Subject: Vegan friendly lunch ideas in Berkeley - please Hello all I have just started a job in Berkeley and apart from the list of restauraunts posted in the Ultimate Guide, I am not familiar with other places there. Guest guest
Hi Veena, Welcome to Berkeley. A few suggestions for local vegan friendly dining/lunch. As you seem to like Indian, these pointers 1st. Udupi Palace (Vegetarian) 1901 University Ave http://www.shopinberkeley.com/u/udupipalace/index.php Khana Peena 1889 Solano Ave and 2136 Oxford St http://www.shopinberkeley.com/k/khanapeena/index.php (liked by many: tasty food, inexpensive, bufet) Breads of India & Gourmet Curries 2448 Sacramento St http://www.shopinberkeley.com/b/breadsofindia/index.php Cha-ya (Japanese, Vegan) 1686 Shattuck Ave liked by many non-veg*ans too; dinner; weekend lunch/dinner; sometimes long wait to get in. Cha-am (Thai) 1543 Shattuck Ave A couple of the 4-5 Ethiopian places on Telegraph: Cafe Colucci is my favorite: happy place; great food at reasonable prices; nice, "warm" interior, friendly staff. 6427 Telegraph Avenue, Phone: 510-601-7999 also Blue Nile (Ethiopian; Vegan friendly) 2525 Telegraph, 540-6777 http://www.shopinberkeley.com/b/bluenile/index.php Cafe Muse (Vegan, raw) 2625 Durant Ave , (entrance on Bancroft too--UC Berkeley museum) http://www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/cafemuse/ Felini (Italian) 1401 University Ave http://www.shopinberkeley.com/f/fellini/index.php The venue was very much raved about recently on this list. However, their working hours are disappointment to me. The vegan brunch is only on weekends, 10-2; the restaurant which has a vegan pizza (with soy cheese) on the regular menu otherwise is open only for dinner. Thai Buddhist Temple (Thai, naturally; veg*an friendly). Russell Street, between Milvia and Martin Luther King (by the South branch library). Sunday only 9 to ~1:30. (but great food) "The temple runs the Sunday brunch as a fundraiser--all the labor is provided by volunteers to best provide you with cheap eats and good karma." more (from my "to do" list): Ashkenaz Community Center 1317 San Pablo Ave. 510-525-5099 Raw Energy Juice Cafe' 2050 Addison St. 510-665-9464 Razan's Organic Kitchen 2119 Kittredge 510-486-0449 Vegi Food (Chinese) 2085 Vine St. 510-548-5244 some more recomendations and good tips: http://www.vegdining.com/GetRestList.cfm?rgk=NA-US-CA-SFBA http://www-math.mit.edu/~kedlaya/berkeley-eats.html http://www.faqs.org/faqs/vegetarian/guide/california1/ http://www.vegeats.com/restaurants/ (many links are broken, still lots to explore, for foodies) http://www.faqs.org/faqs/vegetarian/guide/california1/ Cheers / Bon Apetit Lubo --- Veena Achar wrote: > Hello all > I have just started a job in Berkeley and apart from > the list of restauraunts posted in the Ultimate > Guide, I am not familiar with other places there. > > I am looking for VEGAN-friendly places to go to with > co-workers to get lunch.
