Guest guest
Hi all, I'd like to remind you about (or introduce you to!) a great organization, Small Planet. We're a Berkeley-based environmental nonprofit working to promote a plant-based diet. We are currently working on developing public service announcements, environmental curricula, and more materials to supplement what we already have available for download. We have also been one of the organizers of the popular local Veg and AR 101 workshops, and during the next couple months we'll be helping out folks who are interested in setting up Earth Day events that focus on the environmental benefits of kicking the meat habit. In the coming months, we're going to be doing positive outreach to environmental groups. If you're interested in finding out more about Small Planet or what you can do to help, please visit our website at http://www.small-planet.org or email me at info. You can also sign up for our monthly e-newsletter here, which we are rolling out today! I've pasted our first issue below. Thanks very much! What's New – Going Veg for Earth Day and environmental curricula 2. Upcoming Event 3. Take Action - Stop the EPA from selling out animals and the environment! 4. Tell a Friend ******* 1. What's New – Going Veg for Earth Day and environmental curricula This Earth Day, you can make a difference by kicking the meat habit, or encouraging your friends to do the same! Eating a plant-based diet is one of the best things we can do for the planet, and it's something that we can do three times a day. Earth Day is April 22, and you can help by making a meat-free pledge (or encouraging others to do so!), scheduling a display, or educating others through leafleting, tabling, or more. For more information, check out our website at http://www.small-planet.org We're also working on developing environmental curricula for high schoolers, college students, and adults. We plan to have free resources available in the coming weeks. If you're interested in getting materials for your classroom, just let us know. 2. Upcoming Event - Berkeley Earth Day Join Small Planet at Earth Day in downtown Berkeley on April 23. This community event will include speakers, performers, and ecological activities. Stop by our table and say hello! The event will be held from 11:00 am - 5:30 pm in Civic Center Park. 3. Take Action - Stop the EPA from selling out animals and the environment! Did you know that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is offering some of our nation's worst polluters an exemption from Clean Air Act regulations? Under the " Air Quality Compliance Agreement, " factory farms can gain immunity for all previous violations of the Clean Air Act in exchange for a small fine and participating in a two-year air pollution study. Large corporations such as Tyson Foods lobbied for this agreement, which will endanger animals and communities' health from toxic ammonia, particulates, and other pollutants. At the end of the study, the EPA could even exempt factory farms completely from clean air and toxic chemical reporting requirements What you can do: The EPA is only accepting comments until tomorrow - March 2. Write them today! Politely let them know that you strongly oppose allowing factory farms to gain exemption from the Clean Air Act. Please be sure to include docket ID# OAR-2004-0237 in the subject line of your email or fax. Email: a-and-r-docket Fax: 202-566-1741 4. Tell a Friend A great way you can help the environment is to tell a friend about Small Planet – pass this e-newsletter on to someone. And if you've received this as a forward, you can sign up to receive e-newsletters from us at http://www.small-planet.org ******* We are committed to protecting your privacy, so we never share your information. To to Small Planet's e-newsletter, please email us. -- Erin Williams President Small Planet P.O.
