Hi Debbie

You could put up a message on the Vegan Village Notice Board. :-)

Debbie,

Not sure where you are located, but in our area we have a free area

newspaper called the PennySaver. You can place an ad for free as long

as it is for something under $100. If you have soemthing like that

maybe it could help. Or ask your local schools and libraries if you

can put up flyers.

Better yet, post to Vegan groups ya belong to like this and see if ya

get a bite! ;)

I would love to have one, but me dog would not agree. :(

In any reagrd, very sweet of you to take them in and give them a home!

Good Luck,

while it is true that cats need arginine, cats generally cannot absorb it

from the ingredients listed above, and many (if not all) of those ingredients

can

cause intestinal distress in cats.

a nice thought, but unfortunately an innacurate one. the fact is, cats

absorb minimal nutrients from non-meat sources. if i could raise my cats vegan

i

would, but in their best interest, i choose not to. i have really done a

LOT of research on this, and had to come to terms with the fact that cats are,

like it or not, strict carnivores. had i not changed my joanie's diet, she

would most likely not be with me right now.

i copied the following from the catnutrition.org website-- i encourage

everyone who wants to know about this issue to order a copy of the article.

One of the finest recent pieces of scientific work on the issue of

feline nutrition is titled " The carnivore connection to nutrition in

cats, " by Debra L. Zoran, DVM, PhD, DACVIM.  A brief description of the

article (posted here with permission from the American Veterinary

Medical Association):

" The information reported here is an attempt to describe what it

means metabolically and nutritionally to be a strict carnivore, with a

focus on differences in nutritional biochemistry of cats. In addition,

information is included on possible roles of nutrition in the

development of obesity, idiopathic hepatic lipidosis (IHL), inflammatory

bowel

disease, and diabetes mellitus in cats. "

So then, here is the ethical question of the day......is it VEGAN to

keep a cat (a known carnivore) as a pet?

Well, you can cross your fingers for more advances in food science and

derivation/synthesis in future. In the meantime, dog and cat lover

though I am, I've reconciled myself to being pet free for now --

though that hasn't stopped me from enjoying others' pets I confess :-)

i guess it's no less so than marrying a carnivore, or letting your

kids eat meat in the house.

would it be vegan to let them die in the pound?

Cats can't be vegan, their body requires meat. If it doesn't have meat it will

get sick and die and then you'll feel bad because you would have been

responsible for killing it. Their bodies are different then ours.

*LOL* Good grief!!! If it is not, then may I never meet another vegan!

Here is *my* 'ethical' question of the day: is it kind to pose these

questions to anyone? The carnivore 'pet' has probably been rescued from

abuse and/or neglect and is the happy companion of a loving guardian and

- what? - we are now to consider that it might not be right to maintain

that guardianship? Go away, non-serious person!!!

Interesting question!! I guess we can take the vegan thing to

whatever degree we like.

Here is another question: I have a neighbor who keeps 2 dogs in her

VERY small backyard with no shelter from the elements. They also

bark incessantly. The barking is very annoying, but after looking

in their backyard I understand why they bark. The poor dogs are

literally imprisoned in a small (roughly 20ft x 50ft) area that is

walled off with cement blocks. (This is how backyards come in

Albuquerque) They have no toys and nothing to do back there and no

human attention since their owners quite literally ignore them. I

have never seen them taken out for walks and there is no shelter for

them spare a small plastic child's playhouse with no floor. It has

been below freezing at night here several times this winter. I do

not know these people. They moved in just a few weeks ago. As an

ethical person and aspiring vegan person what should I do? The

neighbors on the other side of them met one of them and thought she

was incredibly rude to her. She also says that she is fearful to do

or say anything because of what they might do in retaliation to her

and/or her house. Our homes are literally less than 10 feet from

each other. The rest of us are quite distressed by this incessant

barking 24/7. I'm distressed by the barking and very disturbed that

such irresponsible people are keeping dogs in their backyard without

proper care.

RELAX! I'm only asking a question. It's just a thought I have and

I have no real opinion on it and was being very serious. I was

curious to see what others thought and to spark some conversation.

Is it kind to ask such questions? It has nothing to do with whether

it is kind or not and everything to do with discussion. It's just a

thought I had and I'm not chastising anyone. I happen to like

cats. I don't have one, but not because they aren't vegan.

i would call an animal rights group (not one that will impound the

dogs, but maybe one that will take them away). make it an anonymous

call if you feel you need to. but no one should be allowed to abuse

any living thing like that. geez; i will NEVER understand what

compels people to be so cruel.

Is your cat named after the Lion created by C.S. Lewis? I love his

books. The name Asland sounds like it, alas he is called something

else (but similar) in Danish.

*LOL* Sorry ;=) I *did* precede my previous post with *LOL* to indicate

that I was, well, *LOL* ;=) and therefore as relaxed as could be and

still be able to pick myself up from the floor ;=) Sorry if my attempt

at response/discussion upset you. I've already commented, in a separate

post, that someone else responded more succinctly and had done so (I

receive digests) before I did although not before I had read it. Sigghhhh.

What can one do to indicate teasing or light-hearted discussion other

than put in little symbols and anagrams :=( - necessary, I think,

because of cultural differences (ie different countries or parts of

countries mean different things by the actual words they use).

BTW, this being a vegetarian rather than a strictly vegan list, there's

a possibility imho that results may differ, as they say ;=)

Love it ;=) Our companion Misha begs for tofu and steals olives but eats

a diet including meat ;=) She forgives us for not joining her in her

banquets, but does prefer to wait until we are having our rather

pathetic plebian pickings before she so royally dines. Noblesse oblige

or sumthin' like that.

My dh and I for some years lived where it was forbidden to have any

companion animals. So, because we were out so much in the day, we

decided on an imaginary 'cat'. She kept us foolishly happy for a long

time, even accompanying us on holidays. ('Good grief, hon, I can't eat

all this - shall we ask for a kitty-bag?' etc.) All very Albee. She

disappeared, alas, shortly after we we were able to have non-imaginary

animal companions. I miss her ;=)

heh, my cat eats better than I do sometimes, I think. I feed her natural

balance kibble & canned cat food, and she's plumped out nicely & her coat has

gotten a lot better than when I used to feed her purina one.

you're not crazy (at least not for that reason). it is one thing to

kill insects who enter your home because they are pests. Flies could

potentially taint your food and cause you to become ill. Its an

entirely different matter when you have animals killed to feed other

animals. But IN the case of cats, then, as long as you are getting

them from a shelter, it isn't necessarily against vegan ethics. I

think for most veg*ns, the whole idea of meat-eating being unethical

rests on the fact that it is entirely unecessary.
