Guest guest
There has been a recent disturbing trend in the area of vegan food products. Within the last year, there has been a significant increase in the amount of products that contain palm oil. While this oil is not hydrogenated and is not an animal fat, it acts no differently than any animal fat because like animal fat, it is highly saturated. Palm oil is 50% saturated while canola and olive oils are 10-14% saturated. As most of you already know, saturated fat causes heart disease and stroke. Now there are some individuals and corporations who claim that palm oil has no detrimental effect. Do not believe the corporate lies or the lies of individuals who want to sell books or other various products. There is a lot of scientific evidence that shows that palm oil raises cholesterol levels. The palm oil industry has engaged in their own research, but this research is biased and severely flawed. Believing in the notion that palm oil is a healthful oil is like believing that George Bush can move us forward in the world. The vegetarian community correctly states that a vegan diet is advantageous for many reasons, one of which includes that vegan diets are low in saturated fat. This indeed is backed by a large amount of scientific evidence. If properly planned, vegan diets will lower the risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke, and numerous other diseases. One of the main reasons for this reduction in chronic disease is the low intake of saturated fat. Vegans/vegetarians rely on healthful fats such as those from nuts, avocados, olive oil, canola oil, etc. In addition to the heart disease risk, there may be a cancer risk. A considerable amount of studies show a connection between saturated fats and breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer. Consuming products that are free of cholesterol and saturated fat from animal fats but high in saturated fat from palm oil is hypocritical and, more importantly, dangerous. In the long run, if the vegan/vegetarian community consumes these products on a long term basis, this will serve to undermine the healthful effects of a vegan diet. In turn, vegans will actually not have lower rates of heart diseaseor cancer, and the medical community and meat industry will be sure to emphasize this. If you care about the success and proliferation of veganism/vegetarianism, It is absolutely vital that we as a community do not allow this dangerous trend to continue. For margarine, use margarines that are low in saturated fat and made without trans-fats. For baking, utilize safflower oil, sunflower oil, canola oil, or margarines (low in sat fat and free of trans-fats). When purchasing vegan baked goods, be sure the product does not contain palm oil. When sauteing vegetables or making other dishes, use pure canola, olive, safflower, sunflower oils that are not hydrogenated. When shopping for baked goods, look at the label to see if it says palm oil or palm fruit oil or palm kernel oil. Also, although it’s not nearly as common, avoid coconut oil too. Companies that sell products in the bay area that don’t use palm oil: Sweet Earth Natural Foods: (vegan apple, blueberry, and chocolate pies; they use canola oil) Whole Foods Sandwich cookies (canola and soybean oils) Frookie Cookie Company Organica Foods cookie company (look at the labels, some of their products contain palm) We urge all of you to contact the companies that are utilizing palm shortening or palm oil in their products and ask them to stop harming the vegetarian/vegan community for their profits. Below is a list of companies that use a large amount of palm oil in their baked goods. Some of them even say their products are healthy. Contact them as soon as possible and urge them to use a vegetable oil that is unsaturated. Guest guest
If " tropical " oils like palm and coconut is bad for the heart, how come the Thai, Indonesian and Burmese people who consumes the most of the above oils don't have heart attacks like we do? The key is moderation and life style. (we can't blame on genetics cause we didn't have so much heart attacks before) I rarely see a fat Thai person. In fact, I usually see Thai women with 21 inch waists. (go to a Thai restaurant) They are as skinny as a rail. (I'm sure their cholestrol level is low too) My Indonesian friend said there's a propaganda again tropical oil, it't not as bad as people think. For years, Indonesian people have been consuming tropical oils for centuries. Yes, Americans are discouraged to eat tropical oils. The companies that use tropical oil, pay MORE for the ingrediant cause they think it tastes better and keeps the product more moist. If we keep eating sugar, oil, white grains and not excerising, yes, us vegans will have poor health. Yes, if we can eliminate palm oil from our diet, that would be help. However, when I bake a cake, it usually asks for a cup of oil. Now that's a lot. Whereas, when making a Thai dish, all I need is a teaspoon/tablespoon of palm oil. I personally, would tell the person to not to eat that sweet, greasy cake and jump into a raw salad! Any questions or discussions, please email to me privately and I'll also forward it to Doug. I'll pass the word to the owner of Black China. You can also talk to them in person cause they are going to open a small bakery in Santa Cruz soon. , Papaya Lime2005 <papayalime2005> wrote: > > > > > > There has been a recent disturbing trend in the area of vegan food products. Guest guest
Personally, I think palm oil products are a great (and healthier) alternative to hydrogenated fats, which are also, unfortunately, consumed by the vegan/veg community. My cholesterol is very low (HDL, the good kind, is high) and I have not noticed any negative impact of including these products in my diet. I would be sad if companies stopped using the products to make great tasting baked goods or Earth Balance spread. It is unfair to state that it is hypocritical to be veg and consume these products (mainly because it has nothing to do with animal rights, but also because I don't think these products are unhealthy in moderation.) Just another opinion. Check out the new Front Page. www.
