Robinson of the non-profit organization Center for Biological Diversity will present a slide show and discussion about the Mexican gray wolf, North America's most imperiled mammal. The Mexican wolf was the victim of a concerted government campaign of extermination that came within five animals of wiping out the species entirely. After passage of the Endangered Species Act in 1973, those last animals were captured alive, leaving no known lobos in the wild. After two decades of an emergency captive breeding program, in March 1998 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service -- the agency that had previously spread poison to kill wolves -- began releasing the progeny of those last wild survivors into southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. The return of the lobo has already begun to restore the balance between predator and prey, recreating the evolutionary force that resulted in strong elk, graceful and agile bighorn sheep, and alert deer. But the wolves have had an uphill battle against a government dominated by the livestock industry. The slide program not only will feature plenty of photos of wolves, but also a discussion of the problems that the reintroduced wolves are facing and what you can do to help ensure their survival. ------ Time: 7 pm - 9 pm. Location: Ecology Center, 2530 San Pablo Ave, near Dwight Way, Berkeley. Cost: free. Info: 510-548-2220 x233. Wheelchair accessible.
