Guest guest
Dear All, Please excuse the recent two postings: one on experiments on monkeys and the other on dogs and cats at UCSF. The purpose of those two emails were to inform the animal-friendly community in the bay area of the need to campaign against UCSF. This institution is right in our backyards, yet many people prefer to turn a blind eye to it. I have received a few questions about what to do, and I have replied back to each of the individuals. For the rest who are concerned, here is one idea: Please write to the legislators, both city and state, as well as to the press. Please educate your friends and relatives about the atrocities that go on behind closed doors in the labs in San Francisco. Somehow, this issue is so repulsive that people tend to want to stay away from it. In fact, I have just been asked by the moderator of this group not to post anymore descriptions of the experiments because it bothered a few people. This issue cannot be less important than factory farming. It is occuring in our own town, and we pay for it with our own tax dollars. If people choose not to learn about what's happening to innocent creatures in their own town, they have the right to delete the email. No one is being forced to read anything they do not want to read. I was accused of causing the issues posted to become unbalanced, which is far from the truth. In fact, there are far fewer posts on vivisection than on restaurants/veganism, or other more benign dialogue. If you care about what's happening to animals in San Francisco, please kindly express your support for my efforts and help persuade the moderator to continue to allow me to post my investigations. Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart. Sincerely, Michelle Take Mail with you! Get it on your mobile phone.
Guest guest
Michelle- I for one am outraged that you would be asked not to post your information regarding vivisection, without being given an alternative method of reaching interested readers on the list. I don't know the basis, but if it is because it made a couple people uncomfortable, perhaps you could preface any messages in the future with a precaution for readers. This tactic is used on network news. Of course the description of vivisection is not pleasant, but neither is the reality of factory farming or the fur trade. The reality for the animals is horrific. TVs are set up on the street showing some of these horrors to the public, and so you would think a list devoting itself to animal rights and a vegan diet would welcome this information. Though it is heartbreaking to learn the truth, I haven't noticed that you are bombarding readers with these details. I don't understand how (in what way) you caused the issues posted to become unbalanced. To establish my position, I have not been active with vivisection and related issues. However, I firmly support those who engage in this activism for those of us who cannot (for whatever reason). (personally, my life is filled with volunteer activism related to other issues) I would ask that the moderators offer a solution, as I did above. Other activists post their activities and I actually appreciated the background information you provided. Though it is awful, I consider myself, as a human being, responsible for at least KNOWING what other members of my species are doing to co-habitators of this earth. I think a solution is to do just as I suggest: post a warning at the top of your message; and perhaps again just before the text gets to the horrifying part. I don't think a solution is to post to a 'forum', since readers of the list are less inclined to move over to a forum. I have found this doesn't work on other lists either. Thank you, Michelle, for perservering and doing the really difficult work that most people wouldn't even attempt. You should be honored for your work, and I hope you and the moderators can find an amicable solution. Guest guest
Yes, I agree with Marcy's idea about posting a caution as to what people are about to read. I know when I get emails from PETA, for example, they will sometimes say something to the effect of "Graphic Information Contained Below". That way, people are forewarned that there may be extremely distressing information in the email and can decide to delete it. The way they usually do it is to put the warning in the body of the email, with the information about the atrocity many spaces below the warning so that people won't be accidentally exposed to something that they may not feel that they can handle reading at the moment. Sometimes if space allows they also put the warning in the title. I think we all know that the burn-out risk in doing work to alleviate animal suffering is real and so there may be times that people have to (at least temporarily) limit what they are reading about. I am sure I am not the only one who has been unable to sleep after reading about what people have put an animal or animals through.
