Guest guest
I've really enjoyed the thoughtful discussion about companion animals. For my 2 cents, I don't think teaching (a term that captures more of what I mean than training) pets, so long as it is done in an entirely positive, loving way, to learn "tricks" like sitting, shaking, etc., is necessarily a bad thing. It means that the animal is getting the full attention of his or her favorite person and is getting some mental stimulation. I think a lack of mental stimulation -- boredom, really -- is a sometimes overlooked problem even for many otherwise well-loved companion animals.
