Guest guest
Hi folks, Thea, thanks for posting the email from Farm Sanctuary. I know Viva also just recently reminded folks to write (in support) of the bill in their e-newsletter. Thea's commented about her concern that the " veggie community is becoming divided over the foie gras legislation " . And Farm Sanctuary's reply (below) hinted at this... It's nothing new. It happens at the national level, it happens at the local level. People within organizations disagree.. > " Please note that the BayGuardian is not actually opposed to the bill-- > the article you and others saw was an advertisement paid for by HFA. > HFA and Friends of Animals are the ONLY two organizations opposing the > bill. I am not familiar with most of the groups who have come out for/against SB 1520, but I do know that not all groups have the same goals/agenda. Some are organizations that openly promote veganism, like Viva! and Farm Sanctuary, which have lots of materials and campaigns in this regard, while others focus more on animal welfare/reform. While I am personally more aligned and supportive of groups promoting veganism, I think there are lots of areas where animal rights and animal welfare groups can and should work together. While the SB 1520 bill is not optimal, I agree, it is all we have, for now. I respect and admire the folks and organizations who have helped get the bill this far. I wonder if maybe so many amendments wouldn't have been necessary if the bill had more support at the beginning. While not eating animals is an important first step to eliminating animal suffering, the next step is making our voices heard for the animals. How many of us wrote/called our legislators or travelled to Sacramento to attend the hearings? So I encourage you to write or call your legislators. The animals don't have a voice or a vote, but we do.
