Guest guest
Hi all, I e-mailed Farm Sanctuary because of my concern that the veggie community is becoming divided over the foie gras legislation. Here is their response: "Please note that the BayGuardian is not actually opposed to the bill--the article you and others saw was an advertisement paid for by HFA. HFA and Friends of Animals are the ONLY two organizations opposing the bill. The bill is still strongly supported by a number of humane organizations including Farm Sanctuary, Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights, the Humane Society of the United States, LA Lawyers for Animals, Animal Protection and Rescue League, Viva!, and International Bird Rescue Research Center. The amendments were made to ensure passage of the bill, which is still important humane legislation. Remind everyone that all the European farm animal protection laws have phase in periods as well. The amendments aren't optimal, but they are small sacrifices we had to offer to ensure that this important legislation moves forward." If anyone wants to talk with me about this issue, feel free to call (415) 238-1866. Evenings work best for me. Thanks! Thea FREE pop-up blocking with the new MSN Toolbar – get it now! Guest guest
Friends of Animals (often in conjunction with animal rights lawyer Gary Francione) has a fairly unusual take on welfare reforms compared to most animal rights groups, in which they think they make things worse for animals. In some cases, they might make some good points (though in the end I tend to disagree with them, personally), but the worst part is that they have a tendency to demonize people who do not agree with their views and characterize people who work for welfare reforms as promoting and even desiring exploitation of animals. If anyone is interested in a good discussion of their views, I suggest this analysis by Nathan Nobis: http://mail.rochester.edu/~nobs/francione.html Jack - thea langsam SFBAVEG Friday, August 06, 2004 9:57 AM Farm Sanctuary's support Hi all, I e-mailed Farm Sanctuary because of my concern that the veggie community is becoming divided over the foie gras legislation.
