Guest guest
August 2004 Volume 1 Issue 8 New Rewards Program Advocacy is rewarding – at an individual level and also when our efforts make a difference and someone chooses to eat less meat or eschew animal products entirely. To recognize and reward the local activist community, Bay Area Vegetarians is pleased to announce the Advocacy Rewards Program! Every advocacy event will have a point value attached to it. You earn points by participating in the activity. You earn even more points by organizing the activity. At the end of the program period, the points will translate into chances at winning some cool prizes; additionally, certificates will be awarded to the high-point earners. The Adopt-A-College program will be in full swing with the fall semester. If you are participating, please email me so we can include your leafleting activity in the program. And don’t forget – join us on 8/19 as we do the write thing at our Monthly Letter Writing Party. Note: We encourage other groups organizing events advocating veganism or doing educational outreach on factory farming to participate in the Advocacy Rewards Program – let’s support each other! Please contact us for details. The San Francisco premiere, organized by Tribe of Heart, and hosted by Alicia Silverstone was awesome and awe-inspiring. The 900-seat Herbst Theatre was sold out. Every part of the experience, from working with Tribe of Heart to organize this event, assembling Compassion Kits, sharing the evening with hundreds of others, was incredible, and we are happy to have been a part of it. We would like to add our thanks to those already given by Tribe of Heart to everyone to everyone who helped make this event so successful. During our guest appearance on VeganTV to talk about Peaceable Kingdom, we gave away a pair of tickets, won by Jeanne Besanceney. Members Laju Shah of Hayward and Destiny Van Curen of Walnut Creek won the PK ticket giveaway via our mailing lists. If you missed Peaceable Kingdom at the Herbst Theatre, Tribe of Heart is showing it for two more days in August at the Red Vic Movie House. Bob's dinner is the first of our 4 monthly dinners (Oakland, Palo Alto, and two in SF). The monthly dinners are definitely a great way to meet like-minded folks. Tammy and Chris are looking forward to the food and fellowship with the return of the Shangri-La dinner this August and it's special 9-course menu for $15, tax/tip included. Thank you to Bob for launching the monthly dinners for us! We're looking for a volunteer to start a monthly dinner series in the North and South Bay. Recipes of the Month Precious Dairy-Free Vegan Favorites -- in honor of Precious, the cow, featured on the Peaceable Kingdom posters with Harold Brown. Phenomenal French Toast Everyone raved about this French toast at our recent Half Moon Bay camping trip – hey, if we can make it at camp, you too can make this at home! 2/3 cup low-fat nondairy milk4 tsps whole wheat pastry flour1 1/2 tsps Red Star Vegetarian Support Formula (T6635+) nutritional yeast flakespinch of salt (optional) 4 slices whole grain bread or whole grain sourdough bread Mix the first 4 ingredients in a small mixing bowl, using a wire whisk to beat into a smooth, thin batter. Pour the batter into a wide shallow bowl. Dip the bread slices, one at a time, into the batter, making sure that both sides are well-saturated. Mist a large skillet with nonstick cooking spray, or coat it with a thin layer of canola oil. Place the skillet over medium-high heat. When the skillet is hot, add the soaked bread slices in a single layer. When the bottoms of the bread slices are well browned, carefully turn each slice over using a metal spatula. Cook the other sides until they are a deep golden brown Macaroni and Cheeze When Wendy asked for ‘favorites’ for the July VFP, this recipe, from the classic Farm Vegetarian Cookbook, was one of our top picks. It was one of Tammy’s ‘favorite’ recipes to make when she first became vegan. And, funny enough, Mary made the same exact recipe for the party, too! Cook 3 ½ cups elbow macaroni In a saucepan, melt ½ cup margarine over low heat. Beat in ½ cup flour with a wire whisk and continue to beat over a medium flame until the mixture (called a roux) is smooth and bubbly. Whip in 3½ cups boiling water, 1½ tsp salt; 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1½ tsp garlic powder, and a pinch of turmeric, beating well to dissolve the roux. The sauce should cook until it thickens and bubbles. Then whip in ¼ cup oil and 1 cup nutritional yeast flakes. Mix part of the sauce with the noodles and put in casserole dish, and pour a generous amount of sauce on top. Sprinkle top with paprika and bake for 15 minutes in a 350 degree preheated oven. Put in broiler for a few minutes until cheeze sauce gets stretchy and crisp.
