New Veggie column in the Metro

Hi everyone:

 

Just wanted to tell you about my new column that will start in the Metro

(Silicon Valley

edition) on August 4th, and how I landed it.

 

In January I noticed the Metro was looking for a full-time Dining writer.

 

I ignored the generic email address provided to respond and found the editor's

name/

email for that section. I emailed her. I told her I could understand she might

now want a

vegetarian to be the full time restaurant reviewer, but i suggested she might

have a

periodic column from a vegetarian. I also pitched the angle that most of my

friends/family

are NOT vegetarian, so I mostly go to non-veggie restaurants and see how I get

by. I

suggested that might be useful info for her vegetarian readers, or just people

who have

veggies in their circle. I of course suggested my self for this non-existent

position and

referred her to the restaurant reviews I regularly post on my personal blog

5 months went by without a response, so I wrote it off.

 

A few weeks ago she called me out of the blue and offered me a monthly column.

It's not

going to be simply restaurant reviews, but also just about being a vegetarian in

the valley.

My first column will be in the August 4th issue, and it's just about why I

became a veggie

15 years ago.

 

My next column will be about eating at Indian restaurants when you're a veggie,

but DON'T

like curry!

 

What's my point: the first is that I'm pretty excited that the Metro is going to

give a veggie

a voice every month. The second is to ask you all to keep an eye out for it and

let me know

what you think or what topics you think would be interesting.

 

But the third is: nothing ventured, nothing gained. I got this gig simply

because I thought

of it and decided, what the hell...to ask for it.

 

That's about it. Keep your eyes open for " Silicon Veggie " every month in the

Metro!
