Guest guest
great letter Nora! Yesterday, she had a dozen people attended her "Animal Rights and Biotechnology" workshop in SF. Gabe Quash conducted a workshop in "Veganism as a Sustainable Alternative" in SF too. == http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2004/06/06/EDG8H70FAM1.DTL San Francisco Life in zoos not for elephants Editor -- I applaud the San Francisco Zoo's decision to go against the recommendation of the American Zoological and Aquarium Association by sending its remaining elephants to sanctuaries that can provide these animals with the care they need ("Zoo to send 2 elephants to sanctuaries," June 3). The association is in the business of keeping zoos and aquariums profitable. This often does not coincide with providing animals with the best care, which is more costly. It therefore sees sanctuaries as a threat. Quality sanctuaries provide animals with far better care than zoos can. In light of the recent elephant deaths at the San Francisco Zoo, and the recent elephant attack on a trainer at Six Flags Marine World in Vallejo, there is no doubt in my mind that animals cannot have their complex needs met in captivity -- being used for human purposes at zoos, circuses or amusement parks.
