Guest guest
Hello - I recently became a veggie (not yet vegan) and joined this list to learn and maybe hook up with some of you sometime. I'm not a big shopper, but am currently in need of new dress shoes and a couple belts. I know this may sound dorky to many of you, but I could really use some tips on where to find these things that aren't made of leather and are still stylish and affordable; I really can't afford to pay boutique prices (like the vegan store on 16th). So, if any of you have good suggestions on this, please feel free to em off the list. Thanks Drew

Hi, as a list member and co-owner of the vegan store on 16th (Otsu), I felt I should respond to this comment about our prices. Yes, they are higher than shopping at some place like Payless or Target, but it is because we purchase goods that have been made under fair labor conditions and from vegetarian companies (which tend to be very small, yet pay living wages). We do not set the prices just for the sake of being a boutique. We hardly make a profit on the shoes and carry what we have in order to offer in-person access to an alternative to the leather industry and sweatshops. In addition to that, my partner and I are both vegan and support our local veg economy, with our own pocketbooks and through dining and shopping referrals to customers, so when someone shops at our store, they know the money they spend goes back into supporting something they care about. That, in itself, is something of value. Sincerely, yvonne info

Hi Yvonne and other business/service owners, If you are listed in UG (Ultimate Guide), like Otsu below, and would like a notation that your business is vegetarian or vegan-owned, please let us know and we can add it. We definitely think supporting veg owned businesses is great http://www.bayareaveg.org/ug/display.htm?id=8 Additionally, if you are veg and own a local retail establishment or provide services and are not yet listed in UG, why not!? It's free advertising so go add yourself. Cheers, Tammy Bay Area Vegetarians http://www.BayAreaVeg.org
