Guest guest
Hey, all - A sizable and important victory for the animals today. The so-called " bloodless bullfight " scheduled for the Salinas arena on June 13 has been cancelled! It was being promoted by the California Rodeo/Salinas folks as part of a " religious festival, " if you can believe it. (Hey, why not? G. Bush is doing God's work, right?) Go to " Google News, " type in " bloodless bullfights " - Several articles are listed. The best is in the Monterey County HERALD. Take a look, too, at the two articles (dated today, May 14) from the Salinas CALIFORNIA. The Associated Press also picked up the story. Not a word in the Salinas pieces about the impact that our calls and letters to the Mayor, the City Council, and the Rodeo Committee had on the decision to drop this nonsense. Or the fact that the HERALD ran a good editorial opposing the fights. Or that the Monterey SPCA was opposed. (San Jose MERCURY NEWS also covered the story.) Nowhere was it mentioned that the animals used in these " fights " are routinely sent to slaughter afterwards, for once accustomed to humans in the arena, they cannot be used again. I saw one of these events in Gustin (Central Valley) last year. It's animal abuse, unquestionably. All the bulls repeatedly ran into the wooden barricades, risking broken horns and/or necks. A man on horseback placed banderillas on the velcroed-backs of the bulls, putting his horse at risk of being gored or thrown. No water was provided for the bulls, or the many cows accompanying them. And all in the name of religion, God help us. Blasphemy, in my book (were I a religious man). Some Letters to the Editors of all these papers seem in order. Yours? Holler with any questions, newspaper addresses, etc. Thanks to all those who wrote and/or called.
