I'll second Emily's recent post on the Berkeley Farmer's market & Flaco's. I

was there around 2pm, and the enchiladas were still warm enough for me, and was

accompanied by rice and beans. I was told that I had arrived too late for the

hot chocolate (which Emily appears to have snagged :)).

Antonio, the owner(?), said that they're aiming to start a restaurant this

summer. That's great news. Also, they may be going to the Tuesday markets

fairly soon. If you're interested, be sure to sign up for their email list.

As far as I can tell, this will be the only vegan Mexican restaurant in the

area.

On a separate topic, I've recently begun using a program to monitor my diet and

exercise (Healthetech's Balance Log - a great program to have on your PDA and

desktop), and had previously never realized how low in cholesterol a vegetarian

diet truly is. I had a laugh when reading recent news about how cholesterol

reduction is very important for preventing heart disease. I don't think I can

go much lower.

This program has also made me realize that my diet has perhaps too much iron.

I used to think that I got too little, especially after a bout of altitude

sickness in the Rockies. Does anyone else keep track of their nutrition and

have insights on this? I realize that there are different needs for men and

women, athletes and non-athletes, etc. One report said that men are twice to

suffer iron overload as iron deficiency (women are reportedly 20x as likely to

be deficient as overloaded), and that hemochromatosis could be a problem.

Anyway, has anyone seen more info on such issues? I'm curious also if there

are other notable nutritional issues that one should keep track of.

Thanks!

David
