Yan Can restaurant- no vegan options

Yes, I had the same experience (having moved from Berkeley to Pleasant Hill two months ago, its been quite a challenge to eat out!)

 

I was wandering around downtown Pleasant Hill downtown and decided to try this place Yan Can; after checkign the menu out I decided on the Tofu and Veggie dish , but thought of asking the lady at the counter if it was vegan (while at teh same time asking aobut chicken stock, egg, fish, etc ). She said that none of their dishes are vegan and mentioned that there is chicken stock in everything. She finally offered to make up a dish for me (vegetables and rice) that was vegan.

And today I got a coupon in the mail from them!. It says 'Fresh Asian Cooking' :-)

There is one in Pleasant Hill, but I believethere are other bay area locations as well. I triedto get dinner there with friends a few nights ago andwas reminded of the importance of asking aboutingredients. Yan Can has a "vegetables and tofu"section of the menu, but NONE of the items arevegetarian, much less vegan. All dishes have chickenstock and/or oyster sauce in them. I found this outby asking if anything on the menu was appropriate forvegans, and he said no, but that there were vegetariandishes. Since it's not too common to find dairy inChinese food (occasionally egg), I asked what thedishes had in them & was told about the stock. I thenkindly explained that those dishes could not beconsidered vegetarian and he argued with me--he wasquite adamant that chicken stock is vegetarian! So, Iwanted to offer a warning that Yan Can is not vegfriendly and to email or write the company asking themto create veg options and to mark their menuappropriately.
