Guest guest
Did anyone catch this on PBS last night? It was a very informative and telling expose on how meat is factory farmed to an astonishing point now. Although it did not offer any options for how to " keep safe " from meat (though the special said their website had information on safe meat buying), I think that anyone watching it would think twice next time they bought a hamburger. I was nauseated by the footage inside the slaughterhouse, and it made me wonder how *anyone* could eat meat after seeing how 2,000 pounds of raw cow and 2,000 pounds of fat are ground together, so that one hamburger contains hundreds, if not thousands, of cows. The most interesting point they brought up (and one of the best " selling points " for meat eaters considering vegetarianism, in my opinion, besides the conditions cattle raised for food are kept in) is the high usage of antibiotics in the feed to kill off the bacteria that inevitably breed when cows are standing and sleeping in their own manure. The general public's resistance to antibiotics is rising as a result. I wish they'd covered more about how detrimental this can be to a population, and how all those antibiotics and hormones given to cows can be so damaging to adults and children even more so. I would have liked to have seen more information provided on how the recent use of antibiotics and hormones are affecting children and changing puberty and adolescence and how it affects adult immune systems. What did you guys think of this presentation? I was glad to see a couple of links to vegetarian sites on their website, but they were hard to find. This entire special made me so glad that I don't eat meat and don't have to worry, and it was good to see this on PBS, where I'm sure many meat-eaters saw it. Peace, Kristy
