Guest guest
I've noticed at various supermarkets, such as 99 Ranch, that there are huge variations in the prices of tofu - ranging from 69 cents for 19oz to around $2 for 14 or 19oz. (At some places, one can certainly find much pricier, flavored tofu, but I'm talking about the plain variety.) This made me wonder what the differences are in the quality. Anyone know why there could be a 75% - 100%+ price variation? I realize that some brands are made in the Bay Area, while others may be imported. Does this alone account for the variation? Nutritional information seemed to be fairly similar. Or, if someone can point me to a tofu-tasting guide, that would be cool. Separately, would this be a good reason to head to the LA Tofu Festival in July? Any reports from that? Thanks! David
Guest guest
David, Make sure you are comparing apples to apples, i.e. make sure the soybeans you buy are NOT genetically modified beans, i.e. the package s/say GMO free. Also, make sure they are organic, grown without pesticides, etc. These two factors will drive price. Julie Julie A.
